How to dismantle and move furniture without damage

Packing guides, , 5 min read

Large furniture is where most moving damage happens: scratched polish, chipped corners, broken glass and lost screws. Here is how our team approaches it.

What to dismantle

  • Double and king-size beds (headboard, side rails, base panels)
  • Wardrobes and almirahs that will not pass through doors or stairs
  • Dining tables with removable legs or glass tops
  • Modular units, TV units and study tables
  • Sofa legs, if they unscrew

Solid wooden almirahs and steel Godrej-type cupboards usually move in one piece; empty them, lock them and tape the doors.

Keep every fitting

Put the screws, bolts and Allen keys for each item in their own zip-lock bag, write the item's name on it, and tape it firmly to the main part of that item. This one habit saves hours at the new home.

Protect the finish

  1. First layer: foam or bubble wrap on polished surfaces.
  2. Second layer: corrugated sheet on top and sides.
  3. Corners: thermocol or cardboard edge guards.
  4. Finish with stretch film to hold everything in place.

Glass and mirrors

Remove glass tops and mirror panels, tape an X across them, wrap them separately and carry them on edge, never flat.

At the new home

Re-assemble the beds first so the family can sleep on the first night, then wardrobes so clothes can be unpacked.

Our team does basic dismantling of beds and tables. Carpenter work for modular or fitted furniture is available through our furniture dismantling and assembly service, on request and at extra charge.
