Electronics are expensive, fragile and full of small parts that go missing. A little preparation keeps them safe.
1. Back up your data
Before anything is unplugged, back up laptops, desktops and phones to a cloud service or an external drive. Keep the backup drive with you, not on the truck.
2. Photograph the connections
Take a photo of the back of your TV, set-top box, computer and music system before unplugging. It makes setup at the new home quick.
3. Bag and label cables
Put each device's cables, remotes and chargers in a zip-lock bag labelled with the device name. Tape the bag to the device's carton.
4. Pack each device
- Laptops and tablets: carry them yourself.
- TVs and monitors: the original box is best. Otherwise, foam over the screen, then bubble wrap, then a cardboard sandwich. Always carry upright.
- Desktop computers: anti-static bubble wrap, then a snug carton with padding on all sides.
- Printers: remove ink or toner cartridges and seal them in a bag, as they can leak.
- Wi-Fi router: keep it with you so you can get online on day one.
5. At the new home
Let electronics reach room temperature before switching them on, especially after a long, hot or cold journey. Condensation inside can damage them.
