Clothes are easy to pack, but packed badly they arrive creased, dusty or smelling of damp. A few simple steps prevent that.
Sort first
Moving is the best time to clear out clothes you no longer wear. Donate them before the move, not after, so you are not paying to move them.
Everyday clothes
Fold and pack them into medium cartons, or keep them in suitcases and bags you were going to carry anyway. Line cartons with a plastic sheet in the monsoon months.
Sarees, suits and formal wear
Hanging clothes travel best in wardrobe cartons: tall boxes with a rail, so clothes go straight from your cupboard onto the rail. Heavy silk and embroidered sarees should be wrapped in a cotton cloth or their own covers before going into a carton.
Woollens and quilts
Vacuum bags shrink quilts and woollens to a fraction of their size. Add naphthalene balls or neem leaves in a small cloth pouch, not loose, to keep insects away.
Shoes
Wrap each pair separately so they do not scuff each other, and pack them in a carton of their own, never on top of clothes.
What to keep with you
Pack a suitcase with at least three days of clothes for every family member, plus any uniforms and office wear. Your cartons may arrive a day or more after you on an intercity move.
