Transit insurance protects the value of your goods while they are being moved. It is optional, but for long-distance moves and expensive goods it is one of the smartest small costs of the move.
What it typically covers
- Damage or loss from road accidents, overturning or collision
- Fire during transit
- Theft of the consignment
- Natural events such as floods, depending on the policy
Types of cover
Total loss: pays only if the whole consignment is lost, for example in a major accident or fire. Cheaper, but it does not cover individual damaged items.
Comprehensive (all-risk): also covers individual items damaged in transit, subject to the policy terms. Costs more, but suits most home moves better.
Declared value and premium
You list your goods and their approximate current value on the inventory. The total is the declared value, and the premium is a small percentage of it. Under-declaring saves a little premium but reduces what you can claim.
What it usually does not cover
- Normal wear and tear and minor scratches from handling
- Pre-existing damage
- Internal faults in appliances with no external damage
- Items packed by the customer
- Cash, jewellery and documents
Is it worth it?
For a move within Lucknow, many customers skip it. For intercity moves, especially long routes, or homes with costly electronics, furniture or antiques, it is worth considering. Always read the policy terms before you buy.
