Moving your car or bike to a new state is easy. Our car carrier takes care of the transport. Registering it in the new state takes a little more paperwork.
When do you need to re-register?
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, a vehicle registered in one state and kept in another for more than 12 months must be registered in the new state. If you are moving for a shorter posting, you may not need to re-register at all.
The usual steps
- NOC from your old RTO: apply for a No Objection Certificate. If the vehicle is on a loan, you will also need a NOC from the lender.
- Road tax in the new state: pay road tax at the new state's rates.
- Apply at the new RTO: submit the NOC, RC, insurance, PUC and address proof, and the vehicle is inspected and assigned a new registration number.
- Refund of old road tax: some states refund part of the road tax paid for the unused period. Apply to the original RTO.
The Bharat (BH) series option
The BH series is a national registration mark that does not need changing when you move between states. It is voluntary and open to defence personnel, central and state government employees, employees of central and state PSUs, and private-sector employees whose company has offices in four or more states or union territories. Road tax for BH vehicles is paid for two years at a time. Since late 2022, existing vehicles with regular registration can also be converted to BH series, subject to paying the required tax.
