Even with careful packing, accidents can happen on the road. If something arrives damaged or does not arrive at all, these steps make a claim quick and fair.
1. Check at delivery, not later
Tick items off the inventory as they come off the truck. Open cartons marked fragile on the spot if you can. Damage noted at delivery is far easier to settle than damage found a week later.
2. Write it on the delivery receipt
Before signing, note any visible damage or missing items on the delivery receipt, with the inventory number. "Received in good condition" written over damaged goods makes a claim difficult.
3. Photograph everything
Take photos of the damaged item, the packing it came in, and the carton label. Keep the damaged item and packing until the claim is settled.
4. Report within 24 hours
Inform your mover in writing, by email or WhatsApp, within 24 hours, with the photos. At Narayan Packers & Movers, write to vinod@narayanpackers.com or WhatsApp +91 94155 50293.
5. If you have transit insurance
The insurer settles the claim under the policy terms. You will usually need the policy, the inventory with declared values, the delivery receipt with the damage note, photos, and repair estimates or purchase bills. Your mover helps you prepare the claim.
6. If you do not have insurance
The mover's liability is limited to what is set out in the quote and lorry receipt. This is why insurance matters for intercity moves and costly goods.
What is not usually covered
- Damage that existed before the move
- Internal mechanical or electrical faults with no outside damage
- Items you packed yourself
- Cash, jewellery and documents, which should never go on the truck
