Address change checklist after moving house

After a move, your old address lingers on dozens of records. Updating them in a sensible order saves repeated trips and rejected applications. Aadhaar comes first, because many other updates accept it as proof of the new address.

First: proof of your new address

Keep a copy of your registered rent agreement or sale deed, and a recent utility bill at the new address. These are accepted as address proof almost everywhere.

1. Aadhaar

Update your address online on the myAadhaar portal using a valid proof of address, or at an Aadhaar enrolment centre. Once updated, Aadhaar can serve as proof for most of the updates below. Official site: myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.

2. Bank accounts and cards

Update your KYC address through net banking or at your branch, so statements, cards and cheque books reach you. Do the same for demat and mutual fund accounts.

3. Voter ID

If you have moved to a different constituency, apply to shift your enrolment on the Election Commission's voter portal (voters.eci.gov.in).

4. Driving licence and vehicle RC

Apply for a change of address on the transport department's Parivahan services (parivahan.gov.in). If you have moved to another state with your vehicle, read our guide on vehicle re-registration.

5. Gas connection

Transfer your LPG connection within the city, or take a termination voucher if you are moving to another city. See the LPG transfer guide.

6. Insurance policies

Update health, life, motor and home insurance so policy documents and claim settlements reach you.

7. Employer, PF and income tax

Tell your HR team so payslips and Form 16 show the correct address, and update your profile on the income tax e-filing portal.

8. Everything else

• Passport (when you next renew, or sooner if you need it as address proof)
• Children's school records
• Doctors, hospitals and pharmacies
• Online shopping, food delivery and courier apps
• Subscriptions, newspapers and clubs
