Vehicles on a carrier can be checked on the road, so the right papers must travel with them. Keep these ready before pickup.
Documents for the carrier
- A copy of the registration certificate (RC)
- A copy of valid motor insurance
- A copy of the owner's photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN or driving licence)
- A valid pollution under control (PUC) certificate
- If the car is on loan, a copy of the hypothecation details in the RC
- If the owner is not handing over the car, an authorisation letter
Keep the originals with you
Give the carrier copies and keep the originals with you. Take photos of all four sides, the roof and the odometer before handover.
Moving to another state for good
If you are shifting to another state permanently, you will need to re-register the vehicle there after some time. The general steps include a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the original RTO, road tax in the new state, and a new registration. Rules and timelines vary by state, so check with the RTO in your new city.
