Driving your car or bike to a new city is tiring, adds wear to the vehicle and costs fuel and tolls. Vehicle transport is often the safer and simpler option, especially for long distances. Here is what to expect.
Car carriers: open and closed
Most cars travel on multi-car carriers: long, low-floor trailers with two decks. Wheels are chained and chocks are placed so the car cannot move. An open carrier is the standard choice for everyday cars. A closed carrier shields the car fully from weather and road debris, and is preferred for new, premium or low cars.
How bikes travel
Bikes and scooters are wrapped in foam, bubble wrap and corrugated sheet, then loaded upright and tied at several points. If you are moving your home with us, the bike can travel in the same container as your household goods.
The handover
- We inspect the vehicle with you, note existing scratches and dents, and take photos.
- You note the odometer reading and fuel level.
- You hand over one key and keep the other.
- At delivery, we inspect it together again against the same report.
Prepare your vehicle
- Keep the fuel at about a quarter tank (bikes: nearly empty).
- Remove valuables, the toll tag if you prefer, and loose accessories.
- Fold mirrors and lower antennas.
- Check tyre pressure and battery, so it can be driven on and off the carrier.
Documents
You need the registration certificate (RC), valid insurance, and a photo ID. See the full car transport documents checklist.
Timelines and cost
Cars usually take 2 to 4 days to nearby states and 6 to 9 days to the south, depending on carrier schedules. Cost depends on distance, car size and carrier type. For a quick estimate, see our charges page or car carrier service.
