Car transport cost from Lucknow: what you will pay and why

Car and bike transport, , 7 min read

"How much will it cost to send my car from Lucknow?" is the first question almost everyone asks before a transfer, a job change or a family move to another city. The honest answer is that car transport is priced by distance, car size, the type of carrier and a few practical details such as whether the car is running and where it will be picked up. This guide breaks down each of those so you can read a quote line by line, compare it fairly and avoid last-minute surprises.

All prices below are indicative* ranges used by Narayan Packers & Movers' car transport service for ordinary cars. The final price is always fixed in writing after a free survey and a conversation about your exact car, pickup address and destination.

Car transport cost from Lucknow by distance

Distance is the biggest factor. A car going to a city a few hundred kilometres away occupies a slot on the carrier for a shorter time and burns less fuel and fewer toll charges than one going across the country. These are the typical bands for a standard hatchback or sedan:

Distance from LucknowIndicative car transport cost*Example destinations (approximate)
Up to 500 km₹6,000–12,000Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Agra, Gorakhpur
500–1,000 km₹9,000–16,000Delhi NCR, Patna, Jaipur, Dehradun
Over 1,000 km₹12,000–22,000Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai

*Indicative only. Distances in the last column are rough road distances to help you pick a band. Your final price is fixed after a free survey, and SUVs, premium cars and closed carriers cost more than these ranges.

If you already know the city, our route pages show what moving from Lucknow looks like in practice, for example Lucknow to Delhi, Lucknow to Jaipur, Lucknow to Patna, Lucknow to Pune and Lucknow to Bangalore.

What decides your final price

Two cars going to the same city can get different quotes. These are the reasons.

1. Car size and weight

A small hatchback takes less deck space than a large SUV or an MUV, so the larger car costs more. Mention the exact make and model when you ask for a quote. Modified cars, cars with lowered suspension and very heavy SUVs need special attention during loading and may be priced separately.

2. Open carrier or closed carrier

Most everyday cars travel on a multi-deck open carrier, where the wheels are chained and chocks are placed so the car cannot move. A closed carrier or container shields the car completely from rain, dust and road debris and is usually chosen for new, premium or low-slung cars. It costs more and is subject to availability, so book earlier if you want one. Our car and bike transport guide explains how each option works.

3. Running or non-running car

A car that starts and can be driven on to the carrier is the simplest. A car that does not start needs extra equipment and manpower to be rolled or winched on, which adds to the cost. Tell the booking team honestly about the condition when you call.

4. Pickup and delivery points

Pickup from a house, a society or a narrow lane can be harder than from a main road. If the carrier cannot enter your lane, the car may need to be brought to a nearby meeting point. Door-to-door service is possible in most cases, but it is better to confirm this at the time of the survey. Long carry is not part of our standard scope.

5. Season and demand

Transfer season, month-end and festival weeks are busy, and carrier space fills up. A flexible date often gets a better slot. The same is true for a closed carrier, which is limited.

6. Whether the car goes alone or with your household goods

If you are shifting your whole home, it is worth asking for one combined quote for goods and car. See household goods shifting in Lucknow and interstate moving for how a full home move is planned. Bikes can often travel inside the same container as your goods, which is usually cheaper than a separate trip (see bike transport from Lucknow).

Open vs closed carrier: which one is worth it?

PointOpen carrierClosed carrier

Best forEveryday hatchbacks, sedans and SUVsNew, premium, low or sentimental cars
AvailabilityFrequent departures on busy routesSubject to availability, book early

For a five-year-old family car going to Delhi or Jaipur, an open carrier is perfectly reasonable. For a new car just out of the showroom, or a car you plan to keep in showroom condition, the extra amount for a closed carrier is easier to justify. A tip: wash the car before handover so scratches and dents are easy to see in the inspection report.

Car transport or driving it yourself?

Many people start by comparing the carrier quote with the cost of driving. Do the full sum, not just the fuel:

  • Fuel and tolls for the whole distance, one way.
  • Driver and return travel. If you hire a driver, add his food, stay and return ticket.
  • Your own time. A 1,000 km drive is two long days with a night halt, away from packing and settling in.
  • Wear and risk. Tyre wear, engine hours and the risk of a breakdown or accident on a highway you do not know.

Up to about 300–400 km, driving can still make sense if you are comfortable doing it. Beyond that, especially when you are also managing a house move, a carrier is usually the calmer option. Nothing here is a promise of savings in your case, so compare with your own numbers.

How long does car shifting take?

Cars usually take about 2 to 4 days to nearby cities such as Delhi or Jaipur, and 6 to 9 days to cities in the south such as Bangalore or Chennai. The time depends on carrier schedules, route and weather. Winter fog on the highways and heavy rain can slow a carrier, so keep a few days of buffer if you need the car by a fixed date. After pickup you can follow your consignment on WhatsApp with your LR number through shipment tracking.

Documents and preparation

You will need your registration certificate (RC), valid insurance and a photo ID. The full list, with notes on loans and hypothecation, is in our documents needed for car transport guide. Before handover:

  1. Keep the fuel at about a quarter tank.
  2. Remove valuables, documents and loose accessories. Carriers do not allow goods inside cars, so pack them with your household goods.
  3. Fold the mirrors, lower the antenna and check that the battery and tyres are in order so the car can be driven on and off.
  4. Take your own photos from all sides, and note the odometer reading.
  5. Hand over one key and keep the spare.

At pickup we inspect the car with you, note existing scratches and dents, and photograph it. At delivery the same report is checked again with you before you sign.

Insurance, damage and your rights

Your own motor policy may not cover a car while it is on a carrier, so read it or ask your insurer. Transit cover can be arranged separately: see insurance service and what transit insurance covers. Whatever you choose, damage caused by our team is our responsibility and we pay the complete repair or replacement cost as described in our damage and refund policy. If something does go wrong, this guide on how to file a damage claim shows the steps.

After the car reaches the new city

Inspect the car at delivery against the pickup report before signing. A car kept in another state for more than the permitted period needs re-registration, and a government employee on transfer may also be eligible for BH series. Read vehicle re-registration after moving to another state before the car arrives.

How to get an accurate quote

  1. Share the car make, model and year, and whether it runs.
  2. Give the pickup address and the destination city or locality.
  3. Say whether you want an open or closed carrier and your preferred date.
  4. Ask for the quote in writing, with what is and is not included.

Use the moving cost calculator for a first idea, then read understanding your moving quote and what affects packers and movers charges. For household goods rates, see packers and movers charges in Lucknow. Be careful of unusually low quotes and advance payments to unknown agents: how to spot fake packers and movers and how to choose packers and movers in Lucknow will help you check a company before paying.

Booking notice is usually at least 3 days for a long-distance move, while urgent requests may be possible when a carrier slot is free. Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to transport a car from Lucknow?

For an ordinary car, indicative* prices are ₹6,000–12,000 up to 500 km, ₹9,000–16,000 for 500–1,000 km and ₹12,000–22,000 beyond 1,000 km. The final price is fixed after a free survey.

Is an open or closed carrier better for car transport?

An open carrier is fine for most everyday cars and costs less. A closed carrier protects new, premium or low cars from weather and dust, costs more and is subject to availability.

How many days does car shifting from Lucknow take?

Usually 2 to 4 days to nearby cities like Delhi or Jaipur and 6 to 9 days to the south, depending on carrier schedules, fog and rain.

Can I keep luggage or household items inside the car?

No. Carriers do not allow goods inside a car for safety and legal reasons, so pack them with your household goods.

What documents are required to transport a car?

You need the registration certificate (RC), valid insurance and a photo ID. If the car is under a loan, ask the lender about the extra paperwork before booking.

Is it cheaper to drive my car or send it by carrier?

For short distances driving can be cheaper, but add fuel, tolls, driver cost, return travel, time and wear. Over longer distances a carrier is often simpler and comparable in cost.
