Moving scams are a real problem in India. Fraudsters copy the names of established movers, quote very low prices, and then hold goods hostage for more money or disappear after taking an advance. These checks will protect you.
Common scams
- Bait pricing: a very low phone quote, then large "extra" charges after loading.
- Hostage goods: the truck stops mid-way and the driver demands more money to deliver.
- Look-alike names: websites or listings that copy a well-known company's name with a different phone number.
- Advance and vanish: a full or large advance taken online, after which no one turns up.
Warning signs
- No physical office address, or an address that does not exist on the map
- A price given without any survey
- Pressure to pay a large advance immediately
- No written quote, no GST number, no company name on the receipt
- Only a mobile number and a WhatsApp profile
Simple checks before you book
- Visit or video-call the office, and check the address on Google Maps.
- Call the number listed on the company's official website, not one from an ad or an unknown listing.
- Ask for the company's GST number and verify it on the GST portal.
- Get a written, itemised quote after a survey.
- Check the lorry receipt and inventory carry the company's name and details.
- Pay the balance only after the goods are loaded, and always take a receipt.
