Advance payment to packers and movers: how much and when to pay

Costs and choosing movers, , 7 min read

"Sir, please send โ‚น10,000 advance to confirm the truck." Almost everyone who books packers and movers in Lucknow hears a line like this. Some advances are perfectly normal. Others are the first step of a scam or a dispute. This guide explains how much to pay in advance, when to pay the balance, how to pay safely and what paperwork should be in your hand before any money moves.

It is written by Narayan Packers & Movers, a registered Pvt Ltd company (GSTIN 09AACCN9507C2ZI) moving families and offices in Lucknow since 2008. The principles below apply to any mover you are considering, so use them to compare us too.

Why movers ask for an advance at all

A genuine advance is not a trap. When you book, the mover blocks a crew and a vehicle for your date and turns down other work. For a long-distance move, the vehicle may also be reserved for the return load. A small booking amount protects the mover from last-minute cancellations, and it protects you because your date is held.

The problem starts when the advance is large, unexplained or demanded before you have seen any written quote. A good rule: no advance without a written quote, and no written quote without a survey or a clear inventory. Our free survey and fixed written quote exist exactly so the price is known before you commit.

How much advance is reasonable?

There is no legal fixed percentage in India, so it comes down to the type of move and how much trust the mover has earned. These are general market patterns, not our price list:

Type of moveTypical advance askedWhat to check
Local move inside LucknowSmall booking amount, or none for a short-notice jobWritten quote and crew size confirmed
Intercity move (up to 500 km)A modest part of the freightVehicle type, delivery window, LR number
Long-distance move (500 km and above)Larger part, often paid in stagesWritten delivery timeline, insurance option
Car or bike transportBooking amount against a receiptCarrier type, pickup date, documents list

If a mover asks for more than half the total before loading begins, especially from a number with no office address, pause. Read our guide on how to spot fake packers and movers before paying anything.

Before you pay: the six-point check

  1. A real office. Our office is at 632/127 Sanatan Nagar, Harihar Nagar, Kamta, Lucknow 226028. Visit if you can, or at least check the address on a map. See our company details and trust and safety page.
  2. Company registration. Ask for the GSTIN and check it on the GST portal. Ours is 09AACCN9507C2ZI, and we are also MSME Udyam registered.
  3. A written quote. It should list the vehicle, crew, packing material, loading and unloading, floors and lift access. Understanding your moving quote shows what each line means.
  4. A damage policy in writing. Read the mover's terms. Ours are public at damage and refund policy: we take full responsibility for damage caused by our team and pay the complete repair or replacement cost.
  5. The payment account name. The UPI ID or bank account should carry the company's name, not a stranger's personal name.
  6. A receipt. Every advance gets a receipt or a payment message that names the booking.

When to pay what: a simple payment plan

For most Lucknow moves, a safe pattern looks like this:

  • At booking: a small, receipted advance, only after the written quote is in your hands.
  • On loading day: after the crew arrives, the inventory is checked and the goods are loaded, you may be asked for a part payment. Check the inventory sheet before you sign.
  • On delivery: the balance is paid after the goods are unloaded and you have checked the main items.

For long-distance moves, the balance on delivery is the norm. Ask clearly: "Is the balance payable at the destination after unloading?" If the answer is "everything before the truck leaves," ask why. A mover who is confident about delivery rarely needs every rupee up front. You can see how our process runs from first call to final unloading on our moving process page.

Safe ways to pay

  • UPI or bank transfer to a company account. It leaves a record. Save the screenshot with the booking date.
  • Cheque or NEFT against a GST invoice is best for offices that need to book the expense. Our office shifting service gives a proper invoice.
  • Cash. If you pay cash, insist on a signed, stamped receipt. Never hand over a large cash sum to a driver who cannot show any authority from the company.

Never share your UPI PIN, an OTP or a card number with anyone claiming to "process" the booking. A genuine payment never needs them from you.

Paperwork you should hold on moving day

Money and paper go together. Before the truck leaves, you should have:

If something goes wrong, this paperwork is your proof. Our guide on how to file a damage claim with movers explains why photos and inventory sheets matter so much.

Red flags at the payment stage

  • The quote on the phone changes once the truck arrives. A fixed written quote prevents this.
  • Pressure like "pay in the next ten minutes or the date is gone."
  • The advance goes to a personal account that does not match the company name.
  • No inventory, no receipt, no vehicle number.
  • Extra charges for "lift", "stairs" or "long carry" that were never mentioned. Long carry is outside standard scope with us, so we say so before the move, not on the day.

Cheap quotes deserve the same caution. A price far below the market often returns as extra charges later; what affects packers and movers charges explains the real cost drivers.

What your move should roughly cost

Knowing the usual range helps you judge whether an advance is out of proportion. These are indicative prices*:

Cancelling or rescheduling: ask about the advance

Plans change: a flat is not ready, a registry is delayed, a transfer order moves. Before paying, ask what happens to the advance if you reschedule or cancel, and get the answer in writing. If your new home is not ready, storage in Lucknow can hold your goods safely instead of forcing a cancelled booking. Also, choose between a dedicated and a shared truck before you pay, since it changes the quote.

Paying for car and bike transport

Vehicle transport has its own payment points. For a car, the booking amount holds a place on a car carrier, and closed containers are subject to availability. Ask which carrier type you are paying for, because an open carrier and a closed container are priced differently. Note the odometer reading and take dated photos of the car at pickup, and pay the balance only against delivery in the same condition. For two-wheelers, the same logic applies to bike transport. Our car transport cost guide shows how price changes with distance, and the documents checklist lists the papers to keep ready.

Short-notice moves

We ask for at least 2 days' notice for local moves and 3 days for long-distance ones. If your move is urgent, same-day shifting in Lucknow is possible when a crew is free, but it is never guaranteed. Urgent does not mean you should skip the written quote or the receipt. Use the house shifting checklist and moving day hour by hour to stay organised.

Our approach

We keep the money side simple: a free survey, a fixed written quote, a GST invoice, a named company account and tracking by LR number for intercity moves. Our local shifting service and guide to choosing packers and movers in Lucknow will help you compare us with anyone else. Read our terms and conditions before you book.

Frequently asked questions

How much advance should I pay to packers and movers?

There is no fixed rule, but it should be a small, receipted booking amount paid after you have a written quote. Be careful if anyone asks for more than half the cost before loading begins.

Should I pay the full amount before the truck leaves?

For local moves the balance is usually settled after unloading. For long-distance moves, ask if the balance is payable at the destination; avoid paying everything up front to a mover you cannot verify.

Is it safe to pay packers and movers by UPI?

Yes, if the UPI ID or account carries the company's name and you keep the payment screenshot. Never share your UPI PIN or an OTP with anyone.

What documents should I get when I pay an advance?

A receipt, the written quote or booking confirmation, and later a signed inventory list, the vehicle number and, for intercity moves, the LR number.

Can I get my advance back if I cancel the move?

It depends on the mover's terms, so ask before paying and get the answer in writing. A fair policy explains the cancellation window and any deduction clearly.

Do you give a GST invoice for the payment?

Yes. Narayan Packers & Movers Pvt Ltd is GST registered (GSTIN 09AACCN9507C2ZI) and provides a GST invoice for your move.
