We move household goods, not animals: we do not carry pets, because no one can look after them properly in a goods vehicle. But a lot of our customers move with dogs and cats, and these are the tips we pass on.
Before the move
- Visit your vet for a check-up, updated vaccinations and a health certificate if you are travelling by train or air.
- Make sure your pet wears a collar with your phone number.
- Bring out the travel crate early so your pet gets used to it.
On moving day
Doors stay open, strangers come and go, and there is noise all day: the most common time for pets to escape. Keep your pet in a closed room with water, bedding and a sign on the door, or with a friend or pet boarding for the day.
Travelling to the new city
- By car: the easiest option for most pets. Stop every two to three hours, never leave them in a parked car, and carry water.
- By train: Indian Railways allows dogs in some classes and in a dog box in the luggage van, with conditions. Check the current rules and book early.
- By air: airline rules on pets change often and differ by airline. Check before you book.
At the new home
Set up your pet's bed, bowls and toys in one quiet room first. Keep cats indoors for at least two weeks and walk dogs on a lead until they know the area.
