A new home is often entered just before a festival, and the first thing many families want to set up is the puja corner. This year Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November and Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) on Sunday, 8 November 2026, so a lot of Lucknow families are packing idols, diyas and mandir units right now. These items are small, fragile and deeply personal, and they are packed differently from everyday goods.
This guide explains which puja items should travel with you, how to wrap each one, how to move a wooden or marble mandir, and what to leave out of the truck.
Rule one: decide what travels with you, not in the truck
Movers handle your goods with care, but some items are better carried by the family. Make a short "carry with us" list a week before the move:
- Idols and photos you pray to daily, especially small ones in brass, silver, marble or clay
- Silver and gold puja items such as coins, thalis and kalash
- Ganga jal and any sealed holy water or prasad containers
- The family's religious books and papers you use often
- A puja box with the items you need on day one: a small idol or photo, a diya, matchbox for the new home, kumkum, rice and a cloth
Gold, silver and other valuables should always stay with you; see how to keep valuables safe during a move. Many families also ask their family priest which day and order they prefer for taking the idols into the new home, and plan the truck's arrival around that.
How to pack each puja item
| Item | How to pack it | Where it travels |
|---|---|---|
| Small brass, silver or clay idols | Wrap in a soft clean cloth, then a layer of bubble wrap; place in a small box padded with cloth so nothing can shift | Your car |
| Marble or stone idols | Heavy and brittle at the edges. Cloth first, then foam or bubble wrap, then a snug box; for large pieces, ask for wooden crating | Your car, or the truck with crating |
| Framed photos and glass pictures | Cover the glass with a cross of tape, wrap in corrugated sheet and bubble wrap, mark FRAGILE and stand them upright | Truck, in a labelled carton |
| Brass diyas, bells, thalis, kalash | Wrap each piece separately in cloth or paper, fill gaps in the carton so pieces do not rub together | Truck |
| Wooden or marble mandir unit | Remove loose parts and shelves, wrap each panel in corrugated sheet and stretch film, label every piece and keep the screws in a bag taped to the unit | Truck, packed by the crew |
| Religious books and scriptures | Wrap in clean cloth and pack upright in a small box; keep them on top of other cartons | Your car, or the top of the truck load |
| Tulsi and other holy plants | Water lightly, wrap the pot and tie the leaves loosely | Your car |
| Kumkum, haldi, rice, cotton wicks, incense | Seal in zip bags or small boxes so they cannot spill | Puja box or truck |
For fragile pieces in general, our guide on how to pack fragile items shows the layering step by step, and the kitchen packing guide covers brass and steel utensils. For antique or heirloom idols, ask about our antique and fragile item moving service.
Moving a wooden or marble mandir
A home mandir is usually a wooden unit with doors, shelves and a top, or a marble or stone platform. Both need planning:
- Empty it first. Remove all idols, lamps and loose items yourself, with respect and in whatever order your family follows.
- Measure doors and lifts. A tall mandir may not pass through a narrow door or a society lift. If it will not fit, it needs to be dismantled; see how to dismantle and move furniture without damage.
- Let the crew dismantle it. Our team can take apart and re-assemble wooden units as part of furniture dismantling and assembly, labelling every panel so it goes back together in the right order.
- Protect carved work. Carved doors and domes are the weak points. Pad them with foam and wrap in corrugated sheet before stretch film.
- Heavy marble stays low. Marble platforms and bases go on the floor of the truck and are never stacked under other goods.
What to leave out of the truck
- Camphor, matchboxes, lighters and loose lamp oil or ghee. These are flammable or can leak. We do not carry flammable items in household goods trucks. Buy fresh supplies at the new home.
- Fireworks. Crackers are never packed in a goods truck; buy them after you arrive.
- Fresh flowers and prasad. They spoil in a few hours and attract insects in a closed truck.
- Lit lamps or incense. Obvious, but worth saying: put out and cool all lamps before they are packed.
Pack the puja items last and unpack them first
A simple rule saves a lot of stress: pack puja items last on the day before the move, and unpack them first at the new home. That way the puja corner is ready before anything else is opened, and your puja box is already with you. If your new home is not ready on the auspicious date, you can place the idols, perform the puja with a few essentials and have the household goods delivered later, or keep them safe in our warehouse in the meantime.
Planning a move before Diwali
The days around Dhanteras and Diwali are among the busiest of the year for packers and movers in Lucknow. Many crew members also travel home for the festival. Our full guide to shifting house during Diwali in Lucknow has the date-by-date picture, but in short:
- Book as early as you can. Our normal notice is at least 2 days for a local move and 3 days for a long-distance move, and festive dates fill first.
- If you need to move at short notice, ask about same-day and urgent shifting. It is possible only when a crew is free, so call before you plan around it.
- Check your society's move-in rules and lift slot, since festive weeks are crowded. See Lucknow society move-in rules.
- The weeks after Diwali are usually easier and cheaper; our best time to shift house in Lucknow guide explains why.
What it costs
Packing puja items carefully takes little extra time, and normal local moves in Lucknow are priced by home size: roughly ₹3,500 – ₹8,000* for a 1 BHK, ₹6,000 – ₹12,000* for a 2 BHK and ₹9,000 – ₹18,000* for a 3 BHK. Extras such as wooden crating or dismantling a large mandir are quoted separately after the survey. See the full price list for details.
* Indicative ranges only. The final price is fixed in writing after a free survey.
Protection if something is damaged
If our team damages an item it packed, we pay the full repair or replacement cost; our damage and refund policy explains how to report it. For long-distance moves, transit insurance is available. Items you pack yourself are not covered inside the carton, so ask our crew to pack idols and frames if you want them covered. Our packing and unpacking service includes labelled cartons and an inventory.
Settling the puja corner in the new home
- Open the puja box first and place the main idol or photo in its spot.
- Re-assemble the mandir before unpacking the rest of the room.
- Clean the shelves, then place the smaller idols and lamps.
- Keep the empty cloth and wrapping from idols aside until you have checked that nothing is missing.
For the rest of the first week, use our unpacking and settling-in guide and the house shifting checklist. For books and papers, see how to pack books and documents; for plants, how to move plants.

Frequently asked questions
Should idols go in the moving truck or in my car?
Small and daily-worship idols are best carried in your own car, wrapped in soft cloth and bubble wrap. Large marble idols and a dismantled mandir can travel in the truck if our crew packs and crates them.
Can packers dismantle and move a wooden mandir?
Yes. Our crew dismantles wooden mandir units, labels every panel, wraps carved parts in padding and re-assembles the unit at the new home. Ask for it at the survey so we can plan the time.
Can I carry Ganga jal and lamp oil in the truck?
Sealed Ganga jal is best carried with you, upright in a leakproof bag. Loose lamp oil, ghee, camphor and matchboxes are not carried in the truck; buy fresh supplies at the new home.
Is it a good idea to shift just before Diwali in Lucknow?
It is possible, but crews are busiest around Dhanteras (6 November) and Diwali (8 November 2026). Book as early as you can; the weeks after Diwali are usually easier and cheaper.
What if my new home is not ready on the auspicious date?
You can perform the puja with a few essentials and have the household goods delivered later, or keep them in our warehouse until the home is ready.
