Every year, a large share of Lucknow families plan to move into a new home between Navratri and Diwali. Some want to do griha pravesh before Lakshmi Puja, some have a new flat handed over just before the festival, and many government and bank employees receive transfer orders in October. The result is simple: from mid-October to mid-November, packers and movers in Lucknow are at their busiest, and families who plan late pay more and get less choice.
This guide explains how to plan a house shift around Diwali 2026 (Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026), which dates are hardest to book, what it costs, and how to keep your goods, your family and your festival safe.
Why Diwali is the busiest moving season in Lucknow
Three things come together in October and November:
- Auspicious timing. Many families prefer to enter a new home during Navratri, on Dhanteras or before Diwali, and fix the date with their family priest.
- New possession. Builders in areas like Gomti Nagar Extension, Sushant Golf City and Vrindavan Yojna often hand over flats before the festival, so whole societies move in within the same few weeks.
- Homecoming moves. Families working in Delhi NCR, Pune or Bangalore often choose the Diwali break to move back to Lucknow, which puts extra demand on long-distance trucks coming into Lucknow.
On top of this, the wedding season starts soon after Diwali, so crews and trucks stay busy right through to February. If you are reading this in October, the best thing you can do is fix your date this week.
Diwali 2026 moving calendar: which dates are hardest to book
| Period | Demand | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Now to 31 October | High | Good choice of dates if you book 7–10 days ahead. Month-end (27–31 Oct) fills first because rental agreements end. |
| 1 to 5 November | Very high | Month-start rush plus pre-Dhanteras moves. Book at least 10–15 days ahead. |
| 6 November (Dhanteras) and 7 November | Peak | The most requested days for griha pravesh. Very limited slots; morning loading only. |
| 8 November (Diwali) and the next two days | Low availability | Many crew members travel home for the festival. Only small local moves are usually possible. |
| 11 to 20 November | Medium to high | Crews return gradually; Chhath travel affects some routes to Bihar and eastern UP. Good dates for families who are flexible. |
| Late November onwards | High | Wedding season begins. Trucks are in demand for wedding transport as well as house moves. |
For a quieter, cheaper move, the second and third weeks after Diwali are usually the best window. Read our wider guide on the best time to shift house in Lucknow if your date is flexible.
How much does shifting cost during the festive season?
Our published price ranges stay the same through the year, but where your move lands inside the range depends heavily on the date. On peak festive days you should expect to be at the upper end of the range, because crews, trucks and packing staff are fully booked.
| Home size | Local shifting within Lucknow (indicative) |
|---|---|
| 1 RK / single room | ₹2,500 – ₹5,000* |
| 1 BHK | ₹3,500 – ₹8,000* |
| 2 BHK | ₹6,000 – ₹12,000* |
| 3 BHK | ₹9,000 – ₹18,000* |
| 4 BHK / villa | ₹15,000 – ₹28,000* |
* Indicative ranges only. Your final price is fixed in writing after a free survey. See the full table, including intercity routes, on our packers and movers charges in Lucknow page.
Ways to keep the cost down during the festive season:
- Move on a weekday rather than a weekend or a festival day.
- Declutter first. Diwali cleaning is the perfect time to sell or donate what you do not need; fewer goods means a smaller truck and fewer workers.
- Consider a shared truck for small intercity moves if you are not in a hurry. Our guide to dedicated vs shared trucks explains the trade-off.
- Do the puja first, move later. You can perform griha pravesh on the auspicious date with a few essential items and have the main household goods delivered a week later, when rates and availability are better.
Book early, and book safely
The festive rush is also when fake movers are most active. They advertise very low prices online, take an advance and then either disappear or hold goods back for extra money. Before you pay anything:
- Insist on a physical or video survey and a written quote that lists packing, loading, transport, unloading and any extra charges.
- Check the company's office address, GST number and Google reviews.
- Never pay the full amount in advance.
Our checklist on how to spot fake packers and movers covers the warning signs in detail. For a local move we need at least 2 days' notice and for a long-distance move at least 3 days, but during the Diwali season we strongly recommend booking 10–15 days ahead to get the date you want.
Packing tips for a festive-season move
A Diwali move usually includes things you would not pack at other times of the year: new purchases, puja items, sweets and gifts. Plan for them separately.
- Puja items and idols: wrap Lakshmi–Ganesh idols, brass diyas and the puja thali in soft cloth, then bubble wrap, and carry them with you in the car rather than in the truck.
- New appliances and electronics: if you bought a TV, fridge or washing machine on Dhanteras, ask for delivery directly to the new home. If it is already at the old house, keep the original box; it is the safest packing. Our guide on packing electronics has the details.
- Glassware and crockery: festive serving sets and gift hampers break easily. Follow our fragile items packing guide, or ask for professional packing.
- Jewellery and cash: festive season means more jewellery at home than usual. Never put it in the truck. Read how to keep valuables safe during a move.
- Sweets and dry fruits: pack them in airtight boxes in your own bag, away from cartons that may be stacked or tilted.
- Crackers: do not pack them. Fireworks are flammable and are not carried in household goods trucks. Buy them after you reach the new home.
Society rules, traffic and timing in Lucknow during Diwali
Plan the practical details early, because everyone else is moving too:
- Lift and gate-pass slots. Most apartment societies allow moves only at fixed hours and need a written NOC or gate pass. During the festive season, service-lift slots fill fast. See our guide to Lucknow society move-in rules.
- Market traffic. In the week before Diwali, roads around Aminabad, Hazratganj, Chowk, Bhootnath Market in Indira Nagar and Kapoorthala in Aliganj are very crowded in the afternoon and evening. Start loading early in the morning so the truck is on the road before the markets fill up.
- Truck entry times. Some Lucknow roads restrict heavy vehicles at peak hours, so morning loading also avoids waiting at the city limits.
- Parking and access. Check where the truck can stand at both buildings. Long carry is not part of our standard scope, so tell us at the survey if the truck cannot reach the gate.
Moving into or out of Lucknow for Diwali
If you are coming home from another city, plan around the fact that both the city you leave and Lucknow are busy at the same time.
- For popular routes such as Delhi to Lucknow, Noida to Lucknow or Bangalore to Lucknow, book as early as possible and keep a two- to three-day window for delivery.
- Keep the documents for interstate household goods ready, including an inventory list and ID proof.
- If you are bringing a car, car carrier slots are also limited around the festival. Book the car and the household goods together.
- Take transit insurance for long-distance moves; highways are crowded around festivals.
Griha pravesh before the goods arrive? Use short-term storage
Sometimes the auspicious date and the moving date do not match: the old flat must be vacated on 31 October, but the new home's puja is on Dhanteras, or the new flat's painting is not finished. In that case, keep your goods safely packed in our storage facility in Lucknow for a few days or weeks, and we deliver them when the new home is ready.
A simple Diwali moving timeline
- 3 weeks before: fix the date with your family and priest; get a survey and written quote; book.
- 2 weeks before: apply for society NOCs and lift slots at both buildings; start decluttering with your Diwali cleaning; arrange the LPG connection transfer.
- 1 week before: pack rarely used items; set aside the puja box, jewellery, documents and medicines you will carry yourself.
- Moving day: start early, check the inventory list, and keep sweets and water ready for the crew. It is a long day for them in the busiest week of the year.
- After the move: unpack the kitchen and puja room first so you can celebrate in the new home. Our first-week unpacking guide helps.

Frequently asked questions
Is it a good idea to shift house during Diwali in Lucknow?
Yes, as long as you book early. The festive season is the busiest time for packers and movers in Lucknow, so book 10–15 days ahead, move on a weekday if possible, and avoid Diwali day itself and the two days after it, when many crew members travel home.
Do packers and movers charge more during the festive season?
Published price ranges stay the same, but on peak days such as Dhanteras and month-end your quote is likely to be at the upper end of the range because crews and trucks are fully booked. Moving a week or two after Diwali usually costs less.
Can I do griha pravesh before my household goods arrive?
Yes. Many families perform the puja on the auspicious date with a few essential items and have the rest of the goods delivered later. If your old home must be vacated earlier, short-term storage can hold your goods in between.
Can movers carry Diwali crackers in the truck?
No. Crackers and fireworks are flammable and are not carried with household goods. Buy them after you reach the new home.
How early should I book movers for a Diwali move in Lucknow?
Our minimum notice is 2 days for a local move and 3 days for a long-distance move, but in the Navratri-to-Diwali season we recommend booking 10–15 days ahead, and even earlier for Dhanteras or month-end dates.
