On moving day, your home is open to many people for many hours, and your goods are in cartons that all look the same. A few habits keep valuables safe.
Never pack these on the truck
- Jewellery, gold and silver
- Cash and cheque books
- Important documents and IDs
- Laptops, hard drives and phones
- Medicines you take daily
- Keys to both homes, vehicles and lockers
Put them in one bag that stays with a family member all day. Many families use a bank locker for jewellery during the move.
Document everything else
Photograph expensive items, such as TVs, appliances, antiques and furniture, before packing. Note serial numbers of electronics. Photos make any insurance claim far easier.
Use the inventory
Check the inventory before you sign it, keep your copy, and tick items off at delivery. Report anything missing on the same day.
Insure high-value goods
For intercity moves and costly goods, transit insurance is worth considering. Read what transit insurance covers.
