In many Lucknow families, the wedding is only half the logistics. Once the ceremonies are over, a whole household has to travel: the bride's clothes and personal things, the furniture and appliances gifted at the wedding, and often a full set-up for the couple's first home in another city. Sometimes it goes from Lucknow to the groom's home in Kanpur or Gorakhpur. Sometimes it goes 1,500 km to a rented flat in Bangalore or Pune, where the couple will start married life.
The wedding season in north India traditionally opens after Dev Uthani Ekadashi, which falls around 20–21 November in 2026 depending on the panchang you follow. From then until February, trucks and packing crews in Lucknow are booked for weddings as well as house moves. This guide explains how to plan the shifting of household goods after marriage: what to send, how to pack new and gifted items, what it costs and how to avoid last-minute stress when everyone in the family is busy with the wedding itself.
What usually needs to be shifted after a wedding
Every family is different, but the goods we move after weddings usually fall into four groups:
- Personal belongings of the bride or groom. Clothes, sarees and lehengas, shoes, books, certificates, a laptop, a study table, perhaps a dressing table from the parents' home.
- Gifted furniture. A double bed with storage, mattress, wardrobe or steel almirah, sofa set, dining table, dressing table and centre table. Much of it is brand new, sometimes delivered straight from the showroom in its factory packing.
- Gifted appliances. Refrigerator, washing machine, LED TV, microwave, mixer-grinder, water purifier, air cooler or AC, and kitchen sets of steel and non-stick utensils.
- Vehicles. A car or a scooter or motorbike, which travels separately on a carrier.
Before you call any mover, make one list with every item, which home it is in now and where it is going. When gifts arrive from both sides of the family and from several shops, this list is the only way to make sure nothing is left behind in a relative's storeroom.
Three common situations, and how to plan each
1. Goods going to the in-laws' home in Lucknow or nearby
If the bride is moving from, say, Indira Nagar to the groom's family home in Ashiyana, this is a normal local move. It can usually be done in a single day with a small truck. The main questions are space at the new home (is there room for a second wardrobe and a new bed?) and timing, because the in-laws' house may be full of guests for a week after the wedding. A local shifting service with packing and unloading is usually all you need.
2. Goods going to another city in UP
Moves to Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj or Ayodhya are short intercity moves. Goods are usually loaded in the morning and delivered the same evening or the next day. Because the load is often smaller than a full home, many families ask whether a shared truck is cheaper. Our guide on dedicated vs shared truck for shifting explains when part-load shifting makes sense and when it does not.
3. Setting up the couple's first home in a metro
This is the biggest job: a near-complete household going from Lucknow to Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai or Hyderabad. Often the couple has not yet signed a rental agreement in the new city when the goods are ready in Lucknow. In that case, a few weeks of storage in Lucknow is usually cheaper and safer than rushing a truck to a flat that is not ready. See all routes on our packers and movers from Lucknow page.
When to book: work backwards from the wedding date
During the wedding season, the families involved are busy, and so are the trucks. A simple timeline helps:
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 3–4 weeks before the wedding | Make the item list. Decide the destination address and the date goods should arrive. Ask for a free survey. |
| 2–3 weeks before | Compare written quotes. Fix the moving date. Ask shops to deliver gifted furniture and appliances to one address so they can be packed together. |
| 1 week before | Pack personal items you will not need for the ceremonies. Keep jewellery, cash and documents aside to carry yourself. |
| Wedding week | Avoid moving goods on ceremony days. Keep one family member who is not busy with the functions in charge of the move. |
| 3–10 days after | The most practical window for loading. Guests have left, gifts are collected and the couple knows their travel plans. |
Book at least 2 days ahead for a local move and 3 days ahead for a long-distance move. That is our minimum notice, but in the wedding season it is much safer to book a week or two in advance, especially for weekend dates and the days just after popular wedding dates. Our guide to the best time to shift house in Lucknow explains how seasons and month-end affect availability.
How to pack new and gifted items
New items have one advantage: their factory packing. Use it wherever you can.
- Keep the original boxes. A new TV, microwave or mixer travels best in its own box with its thermocol inserts. Ask relatives not to throw away the cartons after the gift is opened.
- Do not unbox what you do not need. If the washing machine or fridge is going straight to the new city, leave it sealed. This also keeps the warranty paperwork and accessories together.
- Add an outer layer. Factory cartons are made for one trip from the warehouse to the shop, not a 1,500 km truck journey. Movers wrap them in bubble wrap or corrugated sheets and pack them upright.
- Protect new polish. New wooden furniture and sofa fabric mark easily. Ask for foam and stretch film on all surfaces and corners. Read how to dismantle and move furniture without damage for details.
- Beds and wardrobes. Large new beds and wardrobes are often delivered assembled. They usually need to be opened for the truck and refitted at the new home, which our furniture dismantling and assembly team can handle.
- Steel and kitchen sets. Steel utensils, pressure cookers and dinner sets travel well when packed tight in small cartons. Glass and crockery sets need each piece wrapped separately and the carton marked fragile.
- Wedding clothes. Heavy lehengas, sarees and sherwanis should be folded with tissue or a cotton cloth, packed in a wardrobe carton or a sealed suitcase, and kept away from damp. See how to pack clothes for moving.
If you would rather not pack at all while the wedding is going on, a full packing and unpacking service means the crew brings the materials and does everything on the day.
Jewellery, cash and documents: never in the truck
This is the most important rule of the whole move. Wedding jewellery, gold and silver gifts, shagun cash and envelopes, and important papers such as the marriage certificate, property papers and educational certificates should never be packed in the moving truck. Carry them yourself or keep them in a bank locker until you reach the new city.
The same goes for the bills and warranty cards of new appliances. Put them in one folder and keep it in your hand luggage. You will need them for installation, warranty claims and, if anything goes wrong, an insurance claim. Our guide on keeping valuables safe during a move has a full list of what to carry with you.
What does it cost to shift household goods after marriage?
The price depends on how much is going, how far, and whether you need packing, storage or vehicle transport. If the load is close to a full home, the ranges below give you a starting point.
| Move | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Local, within Lucknow: 1 RK / one room of goods | ₹2,500 – ₹5,000* |
| Local, within Lucknow: 1 BHK | ₹3,500 – ₹8,000* |
| Local, within Lucknow: 2 BHK | ₹6,000 – ₹12,000* |
| Intercity 2 BHK, up to 200 km (e.g. Kanpur, Raebareli) | ₹12,000 – ₹22,000* |
| Intercity 2 BHK, 200–500 km (e.g. Varanasi, Prayagraj) | ₹15,000 – ₹28,000* |
| Intercity 2 BHK, 1,000–1,500 km (e.g. Mumbai, Pune) | ₹26,000 – ₹44,000* |
| Intercity 2 BHK, over 1,500 km (e.g. Bangalore) | ₹30,000 – ₹52,000* |
| Car on a carrier, up to 500 km / 500–1,000 km / over 1,000 km | ₹6,000 – ₹12,000* / ₹9,000 – ₹16,000* / ₹12,000 – ₹22,000* |
| Bike or scooter | ₹3,000 – ₹8,000* |
* Indicative ranges only. Road distances vary by route, and your final price is fixed in writing after a free survey. See the full table on our packers and movers charges in Lucknow page, or try the moving cost calculator for a rough estimate.
Three things often change the price of a wedding move:
- Collecting from more than one address. If gifts are at the bride's home, a relative's home and a showroom, each pickup adds time. Bring everything to one place first if you can.
- Long carry. If the truck cannot reach the door, for example in narrow lanes around Aminabad and Chowk, carrying goods a long way is not part of the standard scope and is quoted separately. Mention it at the survey.
- Storage before delivery. If the new flat is not ready, storage is charged on top of the move.
Insurance for new and expensive items
Gifted goods are often the most valuable things a young couple owns, and many of them are brand new. For an intercity move, transit insurance is worth considering. You declare the value of the goods, and the premium is worked out from that value. Keep the shop bills, because they are the easiest way to prove value if you ever need to claim. Read what transit insurance covers, or ask us about our insurance service when you get your quote.
If your goods are crossing state lines, you may also wonder about GST paperwork. Our guide to the e-way bill for household goods explains what documents usually travel with personal goods.
Moving the gifted car or bike
A car or bike usually travels separately from the household goods on a dedicated carrier. Book it with the same mover so both arrive around the same time, but note that the vehicle and the household truck may not arrive on the same day. Keep the RC, insurance and invoice ready. Our car carrier service and bike transport service pages explain the process, and the car transport documents checklist lists the papers you need.
Things we cannot carry
Wedding homes are full of leftover items, and some of them cannot go in a moving truck:
- Crackers and fireworks left over from the baraat or Diwali.
- Flammable items such as extra gas cylinders that are not empty, kerosene, spirit or large stocks of ghee lamps and camphor.
- Pets. We do not carry pets. If the couple has a dog or cat, plan their travel separately with the family.
- Perishable sweets and food from the wedding. Distribute or carry them yourself.
After the goods arrive
When the truck arrives at the new home, check each item against your list before signing, especially sealed appliance boxes. Open and inspect new appliances within a day or two, because warranty and transit claims are easier when reported early. Appliances like the AC, washing machine and water purifier need fitting; our crew can help with installation, and our guide on moving appliances safely explains how long to wait before switching on a fridge.
Finally, marriage often means a change of address and sometimes a change of name on documents. Use our address change checklist so the bank, Aadhaar, LPG and employer records all match the new home.

Frequently asked questions
When should we book packers and movers for shifting goods after a wedding?
Book at least 2 days ahead for a local move and 3 days ahead for an intercity move, but in the wedding season (late November to February) it is safer to book one to two weeks in advance. The days just after the wedding, once guests have left, are usually the most practical time to load.
Can new appliances be shifted in their original boxes?
Yes, and it is the best option. Keep the factory carton and inserts, leave sealed items unopened if they are going straight to the new home, and let the movers add an outer layer of bubble wrap or corrugated sheet for the journey.
Should wedding jewellery and cash go in the moving truck?
No. Jewellery, gold and silver gifts, shagun cash and important documents such as the marriage certificate should always travel with you or stay in a bank locker. Keep appliance bills and warranty cards in your hand luggage too.
How much does it cost to shift marriage furniture and appliances from Lucknow to another city?
For a load close to a 2 BHK, indicative prices start at ₹12,000–22,000* for up to 200 km and go up to ₹30,000–52,000* for over 1,500 km. The final price is fixed in writing after a free survey.
Can the gifted car be sent with the household goods?
The car travels on a separate car carrier, but you can book it with the same mover so both reach around the same time. Keep the RC, insurance papers and invoice ready.
What if the couple's new flat is not ready yet?
Keep the goods in storage in Lucknow until the rental or possession is confirmed, then schedule delivery. This is usually safer and cheaper than sending a truck that has to wait at the destination.
