Step 1: speak to your doctor before you fix a date

The moving date is the one thing you cannot treat as flexible later, so check it early. Ask your gynaecologist or paediatrician:

• Whether the weeks you are considering are comfortable for travel, especially if the move is to another city.
• Whether you should avoid lifting, climbing stairs or standing for long hours, and for how long after delivery.
• Which hospital or clinic you will use in the new area, and whether your medical records and vaccination card should be handed over.

Once you have the answer, work backwards. Many families choose a window when the mother is well rested and the baby is not due for a vaccination or check-up on the moving day. If the date has to be fixed by a lease, a transfer order or a school session, tell your mover early, because a crew can then be matched to your date. Step 2: let the movers do all the physical work

The simplest rule for this stage of life: no one who is pregnant or recovering should pack heavy cartons, move furniture or climb stairs with loads. Hire a mover for full service, so that the crew does the packing, loading, unloading and arranging, and the family only supervises from a chair.

Step 3: a hospital bag and a "baby bag" that never goes in the truck

Two bags should stay with you at all times, from the day you start packing to the day you finish unpacking.

The mother's bag

• Medical files, scan reports, prescriptions and medicines
• Maternity or insurance papers and ID proofs
• Comfortable clothes, a shawl or light blanket, and a water bottle
• Snacks and a phone charger

The baby bag (for a newborn or small baby)

• Diapers and wipes for at least two days, more than you think you need
• Feeding items: bottles, a steriliser or a pan, formula or breast pump if used
• Two or three changes of clothes, muslin cloths, and a soft blanket
• Baby medicines, a thermometer, and the vaccination card
• One familiar soft toy or cloth, because a known smell can help the baby settle in a new place

Step 4: declutter before the baby things are packed

A pregnancy often brings a flood of gifts and baby items. Before the movers arrive, spend a short time on decluttering before moving: give away clothes the baby has already outgrown, old medicines and anything you will not use. Fewer cartons means a shorter move and a lower price.

Pack by room and label clearly. Use one colour or one label such as "BABY ROOM" for everything the baby needs on day one: cot parts, mattress, bedding, nightlights, diapers, toys. Newborns are sensitive to heat, cold and dust, and an expectant mother tires faster in the heat. The best moving time is usually the part of the day when the weather is mild, which in Lucknow means a morning start in summer and a late-morning start in winter. Step 7: make the new home safe before the baby arrives

• Check the floor and balcony: loose tiles, open balcony grills and low windows are risks as the baby starts to crawl.
• Electrical points: cover open sockets within reach and make sure wires are tucked away.

Step 8: moving to or from another city

If the move is to another city, the journey adds to the strain. • Unpack the baby room, the bed and the kitchen first. The rest can wait for a week.
