Winter is one of the most comfortable seasons to move in Lucknow: no rain, no 45°C afternoons, and cool weather that keeps the crew working fast. But from December to January, dense fog changes the picture. Highways slow down, mornings start late, daylight is short and damp cold can affect your woollens and wooden furniture. With a little planning, a winter move is smooth and often cheaper than the busy festival and wedding weeks.
This guide covers what to expect, how to schedule your move around fog, how to protect your goods in cold and damp weather, and what it costs.
Why winter is a good time to shift in Lucknow
- Comfortable working weather. Packers and loaders work faster in cool weather than in the heat of May and June. See what changes in summer in our summer heat moving tips.
- No rain damage. Cartons, mattresses and wooden furniture stay dry, unlike during the monsoon.
- Good availability after the festivals. Once Diwali and the main wedding dates are over, crews and trucks are easier to book. Our guide to the best time to shift house in Lucknow explains the busy and quiet months.
- Kids' school breaks. Many families use the winter break to move without disturbing school. Read our tips for moving with kids and elderly parents.
The main winter risk: fog
Dense fog is common in north India in December and January, and it affects long-distance moves more than local ones. On highways, trucks slow down, and in very thick fog, they stop for safety. Morning visibility on the expressways and national highways out of Lucknow can be poor, so a truck that normally takes one day may take a few extra hours or an extra day.
| Type of move | Fog impact | What we plan |
|---|---|---|
| Local move within Lucknow | Low. A late start is the main effect. | Start after the morning fog lifts, usually mid-morning |
| Short intercity (for example Kanpur, Prayagraj) | Medium. Delays of a few hours are possible. | Load early, drive in daylight |
| North and west routes (Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Jaipur) | High. Fog is thickest on these corridors and can add up to a day. | Add a buffer day to the delivery plan |
| South and east routes | Lower, but fog may affect the first part of the trip. | Normal plan with early departure |
For exact distances and normal transit times, see our routes from Lucknow. For any interstate shift, our interstate moving service page explains the process.
10 tips for a smooth winter move
- Book a buffer day for long routes. If you must be at the new home on a specific day, plan the move one day earlier than you need the goods.
- Start local moves mid-morning. Crews usually arrive early, but loading begins once there is enough light and the fog lifts. Packing indoors can start at any time.
- Plan to finish unloading before dark. Daylight ends early in winter, around 5:30 pm in Lucknow in December. Moves that run late are harder in cold, dark conditions and in lifts and parking areas with poor lighting.
- Keep winter clothes and blankets accessible. Pack a bag with woollens, blankets, a heater and warm clothes for the first night, because beds may not be ready at once. Follow our guide on how to pack clothes without creases or damp.
- Dry everything before packing. Winter air is damp in the mornings. Never pack damp woollens, shoes or leather, or they will smell and grow mould on a multi-day trip. Use silica gel or newspaper in cartons.
- Protect electronics from cold and condensation. Moving a device from a cold truck into a warm room can cause condensation. Leave laptops, TVs and music systems unplugged for an hour before using them. See how to pack electronics.
- Prepare geysers, heaters and ACs. Drain geysers fully, wrap heater cords, and arrange uninstallation of any AC in advance. Our guide to moving a fridge, washing machine and AC covers the steps. We can also do appliance installation at the new home.
- Take care of plants. Frost and cold winds can damage plants on an open truck. Keep them wrapped and, if possible, take them in your own car. See how to move plants.
- Take transit insurance on long routes. Fog-related road accidents are the main winter risk on highways. Transit insurance covers accidents, and our damage and refund policy explains how we handle damage caused by our team.
- Track your truck on WhatsApp. On foggy days, delays are normal, so ask for updates. We share them, and you can also track your shipment with your LR number.
Moving a car or bike in winter
Cars and bikes travel on a closed or open car carrier. In fog, the carrier follows the same slower schedule as household trucks. Keep the battery in good condition, because cold weather can make a car that has been parked for days hard to start on arrival. Our car and bike transport guide lists the documents you need.
What does a winter move cost?
Winter prices follow our normal indicative ranges. Because crews are less busy than during the festival and wedding months, you often have more choice of dates, and mid-week moves usually come at the lower end of the range.
| Local shifting in Lucknow | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| 1 RK / single room | ₹2,500 – ₹5,000* |
| 1 BHK | ₹3,500 – ₹8,000* |
| 2 BHK | ₹6,000 – ₹12,000* |
| 3 BHK | ₹9,000 – ₹18,000* |
| 4 BHK / villa | ₹15,000 – ₹28,000* |
* Indicative ranges only. Your final price is fixed in writing after a free survey. See the full price list for intercity routes.
Two things can add to the cost in winter: a buffer day for fog on a long route (extra driver days), and night work if you need to finish after dark.
Moving into a high-rise society in winter
Many Lucknow apartment societies fix moving hours and allow the service lift only at set times. In winter, the early-morning slot is often unavailable until the fog lifts, and the last slot may end before dark, so a short window can become even shorter. Ask your society office for a written slot, share the date with security, and check that the parking and lift lobby are lit for evening unloading. Our guide to society move-in rules lists what to ask for.
If your goods arrive before the home is ready, use the days to clean, air and dry the rooms. Fresh paint and new wooden fittings need a few dry, ventilated days in winter, so a short stay in storage can protect your furniture.

- After the move: unpack bedding and the kitchen first, and keep the home warm while the rest is unpacked.

Frequently asked questions
Is winter a good time to shift house in Lucknow?
Yes. Cool weather keeps the crew working fast, and there is no rain damage. The main issue is dense fog in December and January, which mostly affects long-distance moves, so plan a buffer day for those.
Does fog delay packers and movers trucks?
It can. On foggy mornings, trucks slow down or stop on highways for safety, which can add a few hours or a day on routes such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun or Jaipur. We plan an early start and share updates on WhatsApp.
What time should a local move start in winter?
Packing indoors can begin early, but loading is best from mid-morning once the fog lifts, and you should aim to finish unloading before it gets dark around 5:30 pm.
How do I protect woollens and electronics during a winter move?
Dry woollens fully before packing and use silica gel or newspaper in cartons. After the move, let electronics sit unplugged for an hour so condensation can dry before you switch them on.
Are winter moving charges lower?
Our indicative price ranges stay the same, but crews are less busy after the festival and wedding season, so you often get more choice of dates and can book mid-week at the lower end of the range. A buffer day for fog on a long route can add to the cost.
