Shifting from a flat without a lift in Lucknow: a stair-move guide

A third-floor flat with no lift is one of the most common reasons a Lucknow house move runs late, costs more than planned or ends with a scratched wardrobe. Many older apartment blocks in Aliganj, Indira Nagar, Rajajipuram and Gomti Nagar have no lift, and even buildings that do have one often restrict its use for shifting. Why stairs change the whole move

On a ground-floor or lift-assisted move, a crew carries items a short distance to the truck. On a stair move, every carton, mattress and appliance is carried down by hand, flight by flight, often through narrow landings with sharp turns. Three things change:

• Time: a 2 BHK that takes about 4 hours at ground level can take noticeably longer from the third floor, because each trip is slower and the crew must rest and rotate.
• Risk: heavy, tall or awkward items such as a fridge, double-door wardrobe or washing machine are the ones most likely to be damaged on turns and railings.
• Manpower: heavy items need extra hands on the stairs, which is why a survey matters before a price is fixed.

None of this makes a stair move a bad idea. It simply means the move should be planned for the building, not for an average flat. Our moving process starts with a survey for exactly this reason.

Step 1: tell the mover about the stairs before you get a quote

The most common cause of a price dispute is a flat described as "ground floor, easy access" that turns out to be on the fourth floor with no lift. When you ask for a quote, give the mover these facts:

1. Which floor you live on and which floor you are moving to.
2. Whether there is a working lift, and whether the society allows it for shifting.
3. How wide the staircase and landings are, and whether there are sharp turns.
4. How far the truck must park from the building entrance.
5. The heaviest and largest items: fridge, washing machine, sofa set, wardrobes, bed with box storage.

Step 2: understand "long carry" and what is in scope

Movers use the term long carry when goods must be carried a long distance between the truck and the door, for example when the truck cannot enter the lane or society gate. Long carry is not part of our standard scope, so it is discussed and agreed at the survey before the written quote is fixed. That way nothing is added on moving day.

Ask every mover how they treat stairs and long carry, and get the answer in writing. A price that quietly ignores your fourth floor is not a low price; it is an incomplete one.

Step 3: check your society's rules and the lift

Many Lucknow societies and apartment associations set rules for shifting: permitted timings, a gate pass, a deposit, and sometimes a ban on using the passenger lift for furniture. Some have a service lift; many do not. Find out early:

• Is there a goods or service lift, and what are its timings?
• Do you need a no-objection letter or gate pass for the truck and crew?
• Is there a moving-hours window, for example not after evening?
• Can the truck enter the compound, or must it stop at the gate?

Step 4: prepare the stairs and landings

A few minutes of preparation on the day before saves a lot of time and protects your walls and the building:

• Clear the path. Move shoe racks, plant pots, bicycles and neighbours' items out of the staircase. Ask neighbours politely in advance.
• Protect the corners. Wall corners, railings and glass doors take most of the damage. Padding with old blankets or cartons helps; our crew carries protective material as part of packing and unpacking.
• Light the staircase. Many stairwells are dim. Check bulbs, especially if you move in the evening.
• Keep one door open. Prop open the flat door and any gate or grille so the crew does not stop at each one.
• Arrange parking. Keep the space in front of the building free of vehicles, as far as possible.

Step 5: pack for stairs, not for a lift

How you pack matters more on stairs than anywhere else. Cartons that are too heavy cause strain and slips.

• Label every box by room and write the floor of the destination on it.

Step 6: dismantle what will not turn on the stairs

Large wardrobes, beds and dining tables often do not fit around a tight staircase turn in one piece. Dismantling them is safer than forcing them, and it reduces damage to both furniture and walls.

• Remove bed rails, shelves, doors and glass panels before carrying.
• Keep screws and fittings in labelled bags taped to each piece.
• Take photos of the assembly before you start, so reassembly is quick.

Step 7: pick the right vehicle and crew size

A smaller vehicle that parks close to the building can be better than a larger truck stopped far away. For a 1 BHK or a few items, a tempo or pickup is often enough; see tempo and mini truck hire.
