Shop and showroom relocation guide

For a shop, every closed day is lost sales. A well-planned move can often be done overnight or over a weekend.

Plan the closure

Pick your quietest days, often a weekday after a festival rush, and move overnight or across a weekly off-day.

Stock

• Count and record stock before packing; it doubles as your inventory
• Pack by category and label cartons with the shelf or rack they go to
• Fragile and high-value stock gets its own sealed, numbered cartons
• Run down perishable stock before the move

Fixtures and display units

Racks, counters, glass displays and signage often need dismantling. Measure the new premises first; fixtures that suited the old shop may not fit.

Tell your customers

Put up a notice at the old shop, update your Google Business Profile, message regular customers, and keep the old phone number if you can.

Paperwork

• Update your GST registration with the new principal place of business. Changes to core details like address must be applied for within 15 days of the change.
• Update your shop and establishment registration and trade licence as required locally.
• Update bank, insurance and supplier records.
